Desk of the Commissioner - December

"*Guest Column by Temporary Commissioner Brad Lindsay*"

"2023 Year in Review"

Happy Holidays to you and yours! I hope this season brings time for you to gather with loved ones, enjoy some rest and relaxation, and look forward to the coming year.

Later this month, I will have the opportunity to reflect on the past year during an interview on Minnesota Military Radio [ [link removed] ] where I will be joined by Governor Tim Walz. Governor Walz, a Veteran himself, is a staunch supporter of our Veteran community and an advocate for ensuring that our Veterans receive the care and support they have earned.

Minnesota Veterans Homes in Fergus Falls and Luverne named ‘Best Nursing Homes’

us news

The Minnesota State Veterans Homes in both Fergus Falls and Luverne have been recognized as “Best Nursing Homes” for 2024, according to U.S. News & World Report magazine.

U.S. News evaluated over 15,000 nursing homes while completing their research. Only 19% of U.S. skilled nursing facilities earned the “Best Nursing Home” designation this year.

U.S. News Long-Term Care Ratings reflect the scores achieved by eligible nursing homes as their staff care for people in need of daily assistance with medical and non-medical needs. The data used to evaluate these homes come from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and include metrics of infection rates, staffing levels, reliance on antipsychotic drugs, health inspection results and other indicators of quality.

Saving Energy and Money on the Shores of Lake Superior

Silver Bay

The Silver Bay Veterans Home is basking in the glow of a special recognition: the State of Minnesota’s Energy Conservation Award.

The facility, located on the shores of Lake Superior just north of Duluth, is home to 57 Minnesota Veterans or their spouses. This year the Home was recognized for its efforts to reduce energy use. Specifically, the Home had a 70% reduction in natural gas use and related costs.

“In essence, we replaced the old steam boilers that were installed in 1956 when the Home was built,” says Mike Jandro, Facilities Director at the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA). “We installed what’s known as a variable refrigerant flow system with dedicated outside air system units. Basically, it’s a large scale, high efficiency system that doesn’t need as many air ducts to cool or heat a space.”
