Hi friend — Carolina here. You’ve probably seen my name in your inbox before, with updates on DACA and the work we’re doing, but today, I wanted to share a more personal story.

I was born in Brazil but moved to the United States when I was 9 years old. I am a DACA recipient.

Being undocumented, I never felt like I could plan my life too far ahead because I never knew what would happen next. When I got DACA, everything changed — I could get a driver’s license, have a stable job, and seek medical care when I need it.  

DACA has given me a bit more stability, but it only comes in two year increments — and with DACA vulnerable to far-right attacks in the court, it’s still not enough to feel safe.

We need permanent protections so that all of us can be free to live and thrive in the communities we’re a part of. DACA was never more than a band-aid solution. After Judge Hanen’s decision against DACA just a few months ago, we have the momentum to push Congress and President Biden for more.

When I was younger, I often felt voiceless. That was until college, when I found the immigrant rights movement.

I met people who were not afraid of speaking up, who were fighting for their rights — in the streets protesting, in the Capitol meeting with policy makers, and in schools creating educational programs. After a lifetime of feeling powerless, I had found a purpose, I was empowered. If others were making an impact — I could too.

Then, in 2010, I got connected with the United We Dream community. I finally felt like I had a purpose. I felt empowered to advocate for myself, stand up against injustice, and help others do the same.
