Texas Supreme Court Rules Against Pregnant Woman Seeking Abortion as She Leaves State for Procedure
The Texas Supreme Court on Monday reversed a lower court’s ruling that would have allowed a woman to obtain an abortion under the state’s “medical emergency” exception, though the woman’s attorneys hours earlier said she had left the state to have the procedure. Kate Cox sought the abortion after learning her fetus has a fatal condition and doctors told her she could risk her future fertility if she doesn’t get the procedure. A state judge last week ruled Cox, who is 21 weeks pregnant, could terminate her pregnancy — but the Texas Supreme Court temporarily put that ruling on hold late Friday. On Monday, the Center for Reproductive Rights announced the 31-year-old mother had left Texas to get health care elsewhere following what the group that represents Cox described as “a week of legal whiplash.” Read more from CNN.

Communities Need Clinics - The Abortion Care Ecosystem Depends on Independent Clinics Democrats Invest Early In State Legislature Races Where Abortion and LGBTQ Rights Are on the Line
In the United States, abortion care is provided in private physicians’ offices, hospitals, Planned Parenthood clinics, and independent abortion clinics (indies). Although independent abortion providers represent about 24 percent of all facilities offering abortion care, they provide 55 percent of all abortion procedures nationwide. All of these providers are necessary to cultivate and create a sustainable, accessible, and meaningful landscape of reproductive health care, including abortion. Yet independent abortion clinics remain under-resourced and are rarely centered in the public discourse on abortion care in the United States. Read more from the Abortion Care Network’s report. The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, the Democratic party’s primary organization dedicated to electing Democrats to state legislatures, is making early contributions to what the group sees as pivotal 2024 state legislative races. On Wednesday morning, they announced $271,000 worth of investments into six pivotal states. The cash will go towards state legislature candidate recruitment, staff hiring, digital investments, and field operations. Just under a year out from 2024 Election Day, the investment is a small chunk of the $60 million the DLCC hopes to invest this year. Read more from Mother Jones.
