Hello, my name is Brian Butcher. I’m a city councilor in Morgantown.
I’ve been in my seat for two and a half years now. I won election twice with the help of West Virginia Can’t Wait. While the enduring support of this incredible organization made my election possible, West Virginia Can’t Wait also supported me as an elected official navigating government for the first time.
After winning, there were initiatives and people I thought were important to making Morgantown a better place. Every time I brought these issues to the attention of West Virginia Can’t Wait, they supported our efforts. From backing Project Rainbow, West Virginia’s first LGBTQ+ affirming shelter, to facilitating an organizing drive to identify issues our unhoused neighbors are facing and identifying leaders who could help build a housing organizing movement in West Virginia, West Virginia Can’t Wait has stood for the causes I have made a priority in my community.
Elected officials who stand for poor and marginalized folks are often marginalized themselves. It takes a movement to bolster them and build the power of their communities to bring about real change. The most effective I have been during my time on council has been when organizers have had my back. I couldn’t have gotten elected without the help of West Virginia Can’t Wait. More importantly, I wouldn’t have been able to help transform my community without their guidance. If you care about transforming communities across West Virginia and empowering the elected officials making that possibility a reality, then you should donate today.

Morgantown City Councilor
Mr. Butcher is one of 23 WV Can't Wait no-corporate-cash, pro-labor candidates now serving in office. His efforts on council have helped win a wide range of advances for local folks, including warming shelter funding, a ban on conversion therapy, and the launching of a host of mutual aid efforts. Your donations to WV Can't Wait Action Committee this December will help determine our capacity for supporting more candidates like Brian in 2024.
