**White House Condemns CAIR's "Shocking Antisemitic Statements"**

-

The White House condemned recent comments by Nihad Awad, the director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), regarding the Oct. 7 attacks on Israel.

-

Awad's statement suggested that the people of Gaza have the right to self-defense, while Israel does not. He also expressed satisfaction with the attack on Oct. 7, when Hamas brutally murdered over 1,200 Israeli civilians.

-

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates strongly denounced Awad's remarks as "shocking" and "antisemitic," emphasizing that leaders have a responsibility to call out antisemitism.

-

The White House faced criticism in May when it included CAIR in the administration's [fact sheet]([link removed] 202312-14&utm_medium=email) on its strategy to combat antisemitism. CAIR’s name was deleted from that fact sheet in the wake of Awad’s comments.  **[Read More]([link removed] 202312-14&utm_medium=email)**

**CAIR Los Angeles Leader Claims Israel Does Not Have Right to Defend Itself**

-

Hussam Ayloush, the executive director of CAIR-Los Angeles, compared Israel to Nazi Germany in a recent speech at the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City.

-

Ayloush asserted that Israel, as an occupier, does not have the right to defend itself from the occupied, drawing parallels to Nazi Germany's actions. He argued that under international law, occupiers lack the right to defend themselves against the occupied.

-

Ayloush praised the Qatar-based Al Jazeera as the most credible and comprehensive outlet providing information on the situation, particularly in reference to the conflict involving Israel and Hamas.  **[Read More]([link removed] 202312-14&utm_medium=email)**

**UPenn President Resigns Following Hearing on Antisemitism on Campus**

-

University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill has voluntarily stepped down from her role after facing backlash following a House Education committee hearing on the handling of antisemitism on campuses.

-

Magill, along with the presidents of Harvard and MIT, participated in a contentious hearing where they faced criticism for their response to pro-Palestinian student protestors' calls for "intifada" or "the genocide of Jews." Lawmakers questioned their commitment to addressing antisemitism on their campuses.

-

Magill faced criticism for her response to Rep. Elise Stefanik's question about whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated UPenn's rules or code of conduct. Magill's response that it could be considered harassment drew strong condemnation.

-

Lawmakers, including Rep. Stefanik, have called for the resignation of the presidents involved in the hearing. Magill's resignation is seen as a response to the controversy, making her the first president to step down over a response to campus antisemitism.  **[Read More]([link removed] 202312-14&utm_medium=email)**

**Congress Tightens Foreign Funding Reporting Requirements**

-

A bill introducing new reporting requirements for universities and academics receiving foreign financial support passed the House by a vote of 246-170.

-

The Defending Education Transparency and Ending Rogue Regimes Engaging in Nefarious Transactions Act would lower the current reporting threshold from $250,000 to $50,000 for funding from most countries, with a $0 threshold for “countries of concern” such as China and Iran.

-

In addition to lowering minimum reporting thresholds, the bill “closes loopholes that allow foreign entities to hide the true origin or purpose of their gifts. Every disclosure must include the intended purpose, dates, and person at the institution responsible for accepting the gift.”  **[Read More]([link removed] 202312-14&utm_medium=email)**
