| This year, our team documented ALEC’s return to its religious right roots and the work it does behind the scenes to restrict reproductive freedom. ALEC’s first director was Paul Weyrich — who co-founded Moral Majority — and its early agenda was anti-abortion, anti-ERA, and anti-integration. So it came as no surprise when CMD revealed that nearly 700 ALEC lawmakers have voted to ban abortion. CMD also reported that ALEC had Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America — which backs a national ban on abortion — host the opening reception at its 50th annual meeting this summer, and that attending lawmakers were fed a steady diet of anti-abortion propaganda. Last year, CMD exposed that the same radical anti-abortion group gave ALEC legislators training on how to campaign on banning abortion in a post-Roe world, and that ALEC sold access to its members for a “Pro-Life Legislative Summit.” Indeed, ALEC’s former Arkansas state chair formed the National Association of Christian Lawmakers — described as “ALEC from a biblical worldview” — which made the Texas Heartbeat Act their first model bill. Straight out of the Handmaid’s Tale, the act bans abortion after six weeks and provides a $10,000 bounty for turning in anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion after that. ALEC downplays its anti-abortion agenda and cozy ties to religious right and anti-LGBTQ hate groups for fear of spooking its corporate funders, but CMD is calling its bluff.
