John,
“To boldly go where no one has gone before” are words I live by as a part of our environmental movement, and I hope you will too.
I joined Washington Conservation Action’s board because I saw it as an organization willing to take risks: to prioritize environmental justice, to meaningfully partner with communities across the state, and to commit to standing against powerful interests.
Over the last few years, I have seen WCA shift to center Over the last few years, I have seen WCA shift to center environmental justice and racial equity – long overdue in our larger environmental movement. While recognizing our past, our organization has been able to grow and adapt to what is needed, and in the process, has advanced crucial and pioneering environmental policy and change.
We are the Star Trek of environmental leadership in our state: trying new approaches, learning different languages, and building strong bonds along the way as we deliver on our mission. That’s why I volunteer with and donate to WCA each year.
Taking risks isn't easy, but to me, it shows courage and integrity. WCA does the hard work needed to build a healthy environment and a just future. Donate today and your gift will be doubled! [[link removed]]
When I sit on the shoreline at həʔapus Village Park and Shoreline Habitat on the Duwamish River, I can imagine the change we need. Mistreated and neglected by Seattle area industries and public agencies for over a hundred years, the Duwamish River’s surrounding neighborhoods are leading some of the most exciting environmental justice solutions in the country.
Our shared connection to the environment and an acknowledgment of the past can drive immense change within institutions and organizations to take risks and be different. We are seeing the results of some of that thinking now – just visit the Duwamish River Peoples Park when families picnic and watch Port of Seattle green jobs trainees learn to plant snowberry bushes and maintain shoreline habitats.
We can write new chapters and create new legacies.
Navigating and harnessing opportunities to tie our vision for a just economy and thriving environment closer together is an art that WCA does incredibly well. Support this work by donating today and having it doubled. [[link removed]]
It will take so many of us to take risks and be different—to go boldly where no one has gone before. I hope we can count on you to join us.
Donate today, have your gift matched, and come together with members from across the state and help us build the environmental movement we need in Washington. [[link removed]]
