The House Oversight Committee has declared its intent to initiate contempt proceedings against President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, as disclosed through a statement shared on social media platform X. In a joint communication by committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH), Republicans allege that Hunter unlawfully defied a subpoena and emphasize that he will face consequences for his actions. "Hunter Biden today defied lawful subpoenas, and we will now initiate contempt of Congress proceedings. We will not provide special treatment because his last name is Biden. As our committees were today prepared to depose Hunter Biden, he chose to make a public statement on Capitol Hill instead," wrote the Republican leaders. They further highlight the ongoing obstruction from the White House and witnesses, announcing a vote on an impeachment inquiry resolution to bolster their legal case in the courts. The Republican leaders assert that today's obstruction by Hunter Biden underscores the necessity for a formal vote, asserting that President Biden and his family must be held accountable for alleged corruption and obstruction. Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), expressing support for the contempt proceedings during a joint press conference with Comer (R-KY), deems Hunter Biden's refusal to appear unacceptable, accusing him of attempting to conceal money laundering and abuse of power. Responding to questions about Hunter's press conference addressing the public posting of explicit photos by Republicans, Greene dismisses it as a distraction, emphasizing Hunter's guilt and reluctance to testify under oath. "He’s obviously guilty. He went out there in front of the press and spread all his lies, but he wouldn’t come in here under oath? That’s someone who is clearly trying to hide the truth from the American people. We were even willing to bring cameras in here for him today." Hunter had initially agreed to appear before the Oversight Committee but reversed course when denied the opportunity to open the hearing to the public. This abrupt change occurred on the same day Republicans were poised to formalize an impeachment inquiry into President Biden's involvement with his family's business affairs. Amid mounting evidence, special counsel David Weiss has charged Hunter Biden in two states with tax fraud related to overseas business deals. James Biden, the president's brother, has been subpoenaed regarding money received from these deals, some of which reportedly found its way into the president's private bank account. A significant 70 percent of Americans reportedly believe that President Biden acted unethically in his family's business dealings, a charge vehemently denied by the president. The situation has become a source of concern even among his closest aides, who are wary of broaching the topic due to uncertainty about his reaction.
