Ayanna Pressley for Congress

This week, Ayanna testified before the Education Department about the importance of delivering relief to the millions of Americans who are burdened by student loan debt.

Last year, President Biden’s plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for borrowers offered so much hope to people that believed they would never be able to start a family, open a business, or achieve financial stability.

In her testimony, Ayanna made plain that the reach and impact of that historic plan should be the bare minimum of what the Department of Education produces.

She spoke on behalf of burdened borrowers throughout the Massachusetts 7th and across the country.

She spoke on behalf of the third-grade teacher who spent a decade in the classroom, month by month struggling to make their student loan payments on a teacher’s income.

She spoke on behalf of the 76-year-old grandmother on a fixed income still paying her student loans, who now owes more than she borrowed.

And she spoke on behalf of the young family balancing the skyrocketing cost of child care, rent, and student loans.

It’s been less than three months since student loan payments resumed, and borrowers across the country are once again being squeezed. And this burden is felt disproportionately by Black and Latinx students who have to borrow at higher rates that take longer for them to pay — leaving communities of color holding a disproportionate share of the nation’s student debt burden.

Despite this, Republicans in Congress are trying to overturn President Biden’s SAVE Plan, which could cap the interest on loans and reduce monthly payments depending on income.

Student debt cancellation is essential. But Republican officials are doing everything they can to rip away lifesaving student debt relief from borrowers who need it — an unacceptable move that would only harm folks across the nation. That’s why Ayanna is working to stop Republicans from overturning the SAVE Plan and pressing the Biden Administration to deliver student debt cancellation as quickly as possible, to as many borrowers as possible.

If you agree that the Biden Administration must deliver on its promise of student debt cancellation and not leave vulnerable borrowers behind, add your name right away.

When the corrupt Supreme Court obstructed student debt relief, President Biden promised he would use other tools to cancel student debt. Ayanna is fighting hard to make sure he makes good on that promise, and she won’t stop fighting for borrowers to get the student debt cancellation they demand and deserve.
