John,
It’s been a year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, and we are seeing the results are disastrous.
States with heavy restrictions on abortion have maternal childbirth mortality rates 62% higher than states with abortion access. Yet nearly a third of women of childbearing age in the U.S. currently live in states with highly restricted abortion care or complete bans. A dozen more states are still ready to restrict abortion access further.
New doctors are not being adequately trained, as 28% of OB/GYN residency programs are in states in which abortion is banned. The year 2022 saw a 20% increase in death threats against doctors who provide abortion services over the previous year.
Longer travel distances also reduce the availability of abortion, resulting in increased maternal deaths and complications.
The Abortion Justice Act is designed to reduce systemic barriers to abortion care across the country, making it accessible regardless of zip code, annual income, immigration status, or racial or ethnic background.
It’s crucial that we build support for the Abortion Justice Act to keep it a top priority until we succeed. Urge Congress to treat abortion as fundamental healthcare, accessible to all who need it.
The Abortion Justice Act treats bodily autonomy as a right codified in law.
Introduced by Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Nikema Williams, Cori Bush, Veronica Escobar, and Maxwell Frost, this bill will make abortion legal across the country, as it was before Dobbs. It will also require that health insurance covers it, prevent the criminalization of providers and patients, fund training, research, and abortion-related doula care, and address systemic barriers in the healthcare system.
Many highly individual and varied circumstances can lead to the need for abortion care, and the right to fundamental healthcare must not be denied by state legislatures or local restrictions.
Add your name now and tell Congress to guarantee the legal right to abortion care without barriers for all who need it.
Thank you for working to ensure that all Americans have the right to fundamental healthcare.
