Dear John,
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is picking up right where Kevin McCarthy left off in his drive to fast-track the “immediate” creation of a “fiscal commission” to go behind closed doors and make massive cuts to Social Security and Medicare.
He announced it in his first speech as Speaker.
House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington, working in lockstep with the Speaker, has already started holding hearings to create this commission, which President Biden has called out as a “death panel for Medicare and Social Security.”
If the GOP attempts another government shutdown showdown in January, you can be sure Arrington will try to wedge this commission into any deal.
Sign the petition now and tell Congress: A vote for a “fiscal commission” is a vote to cut Social Security and Medicare! Don’t let the GOP hide this behind closed doors!
There is no question that Americans of both parties want Social Security and Medicare expanded. 80% of Americans in recent polling want Social Security and Medicare to be protected. No wonder Republicans want to do their dirty work in secret.
If they can get a single Democrat to serve on the commission, they can call it “bipartisan,” in an attempt to share the blame for their destructive agenda. Democrats must stand together and boycott this cynical “fiscal commission.”
Both programs, Medicare and Social Security, are essential to maintaining quality of life for millions of Americans. As usual, Republicans are trying to present themselves as the party of fiscal prudence, despite their profligate record of deficit-exploding mega-tax cuts for the super-rich. This is because the GOP will always fight any efforts to make the wealthy pay their fair share for the greater good. In other words, for Democrats, this “commission” is a no-win situation.
The only way to win this game is not to play!
Democrats must stand firm and refuse to lend the commission any kind of fig leaf to disguise their true intent. Only if we insist on holding this debate in the public eye will it be possible for voters to see the facts: The contrast is exceedingly clear. Democrats plan to expand Social Security, while Republicans plan to slash it.
Tell Congress not to shroud such an important debate in secrecy. They must insist on holding the debate in the open, so voters can decide the future America they want.

Thank you for letting Congress know we are watching them.
