Across the United States, 64 million people live in neighborhoods that have historically relied on jobs and revenue from the oil, gas and coal industries. These communities are at risk of being left behind by the clean energy transition, but new WRI analysis finds that that is just one of many burdens they’re experiencing. Nearly half of America’s “energy communities” are also classified as disadvantaged, whether from a legacy of pollution, high poverty and unemployment rates, poor health, etc. The countrywide shift to a net-zero economy is an opportunity to finally address the cumulative burdens many U.S. communities face.
