I just started a petition titled "Tell Governor Mike Parson to implement a rent freeze and moratorium on all evictions in Missouri!"

Coronavirus (COVI-19) is now officially classified as a pandemic and the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases Director has stated, “it’s going to get worse.'' Across media outlets, the prevailing safety precautions include “wash your hands" and “stay home”. However, residents in this state are not guaranteed to have access to these basic necessities. Water shut-offs, evictions and homelessness significantly worsen the threat posed by COVI-19. If more residents are evicted during this period, COVID-19 could start to spread more rapidly among those who become homeless. We cannot afford to have more emergencies on top of the current emergency.

We must protect our families. Sign now to tell Governor Mike Parson that we need an immediate rent freeze and moratorium on all evictions now.

Every day, people face devastating challenges like eviction, water shut-offs, and layoffs. And this is no different during the coronavirus outbreak: thousands of Black people work low-wage jobs, and already have difficulty paying their bills and their rent, with coronavirus making these tasks that much more difficult. But, company owners, landlords, and utility companies do not seem to care. During this health crisis, they continue to lay people off, shut off families’ water, and evict people from their homes.

We can't afford to delay action in this moment. We urge Governor Mike Parson follow the lead of Detroit and San Jose - to stand with your constituents, to stop preventable illness and displacements and implement a rent freeze and moratorium on all evictions, utility shut offs, and job layoffs in the state of Missouri.
