Extreme weather events are increasingly threatening agriculture across the US, and small family farms are suffering the worst of its impacts. Here’s why:
The cost to insure smaller farms is higher per acre compared to larger farms.
Smaller farms have less access to infrastructure like grain storage facilities, which help larger farms manage weather risks.
With crops consolidated in smaller areas, small farms are at higher risk of losing high percentages or all of their crops to a single storm.
Thanks to the advocacy of SEEC Members like Representatives Kim Schrier and Chellie Pingree, the latest government shutdown aversion bill extended our country’s existing Farm Bill for another year. They were also able to protect the Inflation Reduction Act’s climate-friendly agriculture money, which House Republicans have been targeting for cuts.
Our country’s farmers are on the frontlines of the battle with climate change and need to be supported, not abandoned, by Congress.
Thanks to your help in 2022, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 118th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
