Hi John xxxxxx,
We wanted to share this important story:
Kate Cox, a Texas woman and mother of two children, was around 20 weeks pregnant when she learned the devastating news that her baby had Trisomy 18, a rare and likely fatal diagnosis. In order to protect her health and future fertility, she needed an abortion. Last Tuesday, according to Reuters, she bravely filed a lawsuit seeking a “temporary restraining order preventing Texas from enforcing its near-total ban on abortion in her case.”
Here’s the thing, according to Reuters, “Although her doctors believed abortion was medically necessary for her, they were unwilling to perform one without a court order in the face of potential penalties including life in prison and loss of their licenses.”
A district judge granted the request, but Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton appealed that judge’s decision on the grounds that she “fell short” of proving she qualified for an exception. He then went on to warn that “Texas courts were not intended to be ‘revolving doors of permission slips to obtain abortions." (We couldn’t agree more.)
Why are so many men in our government making these decisions? How does one man (who is not a doctor) have the audacity to decide a woman “fell short” of proving anything about her body?
At Her Bold Move, we are working to get more women leaders into the rooms where decisions about OUR BODIES are being made. These abortion bans are infringing on the health and safety of REAL WOMEN. We must elect fiercely pro-choice women to office – women who will fight for abortion access in Texas and beyond. Will you help us replace these anti-choice men with pro-choice WOMEN in 2024 by rushing $20.24 today?
Due to her deteriorating condition, Kate left the state to obtain an abortion. We know there are many more women in her situation who do not have that option. As Nancy Northup, the chief executive of the Center for Reproductive Rights, stated, for them, this diagnosis could be a death sentence.
Meanwhile, this week, the Supreme Court agreed to hear anti-abortion extremists’ case to determine whether to impose restrictions on mifepristone – a lifesaving medication prescribed to end pregnancies that are less than 10 weeks along.
Make no mistake: This is about controlling women. This is exactly why we must elect fiercely pro-choice women to office who will fight for abortion access in Texas and beyond. Will you help us fight to elect pro-choice candidates in 2024 by rushing $20.24 today?
