Four years ago, a relatively unknown congressman was all over cable TV making some very insistent statements as the House of Representatives moved toward its first impeachment of Donald Trump.
“The founders of this country warned against a single-party impeachment for good reason. They feared that it would bitterly and perhaps irreparably divide our nation.”
“We have an election in 11 months. Let the people decide this.”
That relatively unknown congressman was Rep. Mike Johnson — who of course is now Speaker of the House. (Until the MAGA wing turns on him like it did his recently deposed predecessor, Kevin McCarthy.)
In a move that could not be more hypocritical, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is pushing Congress to open a groundless impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.
Um, a few thoughts:
- Today’s Republican Party clearly doesn’t know the meaning of hypocrisy or shame. But this is quite pathetic nonetheless.
- Trump’s first impeachment was over his attempt to solicit foreign intervention in the 2020 election — essentially blackmailing the government of Ukraine, by withholding aid, to dig up dirt on Hunter Biden, son of Trump’s political rival — and then obstructing a congressional inquiry into the plot.
- The evidence of Trump’s wrongdoing was mountainous.
- And, in case anyone has forgotten, Trump was impeached not once but twice — single-handedly equaling the total number of previous presidential impeachments in our nation’s entire history.
- Meanwhile, Trumpist Republicans have been desperately scrounging for something — anything — to credibly impeach Joe Biden over.
- And what have they come up with? Exactly bupkis. Zilch. Not one damn thing.
You don’t have to think Joe Biden is the best president ever to recognize that this impeachment charade by House Republicans is nothing but naked partisan retaliation in fealty to Donald Trump.
A message to every member of Congress:
The unfounded impeachment charade being ginned up by rookie House Speaker Mike Johnson is nothing more than flagrant partisan retaliation and a transparent maneuver to distract from the criminal charges — the numerous criminal charges — against Donald Trump. It should be ended before it goes any further.
