When: Saturday, December 16, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM Where: 320 Beverley Drive, Alexandria, VA 22305
Through our Stretch Our Parks initiative, we have partnered with the Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities, North Ridge Citizens’ Association, neighbors, Boy Scouts, master naturalists and other groups to improve the habitat at Monticello Park. This park is well-loved and well utilized by birders due to the great views of warblers, and its trails were in great need of mulching to cover exposed tree roots. In October and November, over 65 people worked in the park and in the adjacent protected Kust property to remove dozens of empty plastic pots, dig out invasive Amur Honeysuckle and Porcelain Berry, rescue several trees from invasive vines, spread 100+ bags of mulch on pathways, plant and water several large new trees, and create a barrier to block foot traffic from a sensitive marshy area. Read more about the project here.
Join us and Boy Scout Troop 129 again on Saturday, December 16 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM if you are not signed up to do the Christmas Bird Count. Help us stretch the ecological benefits of Monticello Park. Sign up here.
