Sheldon Whitehouse warn of “right-wing dark-money network seeking to undermine the future of democratic elections in the United States,” progressives have far outstripped Republicans in harnessing the power of putatively non-partisan, nonprofit organizations that push the boundaries to win elections. More than 150 progressive nonprofits spent $1.35 billion on political activities in 2021 and 2022, according to data compiled by Restoration of America, a conservative political action committee. Although there are no readily available estimates of comparable conservative efforts, observers say they are overmatched...The charities that fund voter registration have been created by an activist league with roots in
community organizing from Barak Obama’s 2008 presidential candidacy...That was the same year the nonprofit Arabella Legacy Fund was founded by former Clinton administration appointee Eric Kessler with a stated mission of 'environmental preservation and protection.' Arabella’s application cited Bible verses to support its proposed environmental advocacy. In 2009 the group became the New Venture Fund, which has provided millions of dollars to voting nonprofits...Courting, creating, and funding nonprofits by progressives is now a core Democratic Party strategy, one that has proven successful as Democrats have prevailed or outperformed historical expectations in national elections."

The windmills in Spain fall mainly on the plain.

(12/5/23) reports: "Approximately 36% of energy-generating wind turbines in Spain will need to be decommissioned within the next five years as they become obsolete, predicts the Wind Energy Association (AEE). This translates to around 7,500 wind turbines and 20,000 blades turning into scrap that will have to be dismantled, transported, and processed, posing a significant logistical challenge. According to the industry association, every third wind turbine currently operating in Spain was installed before 2005, while the lifespan of wind turbines generating electricity is estimated at 20-25 years. Despite this, about 85% of components, including steel, copper wires, electronics, and generators, can be reused. The challenging aspect of disposal is the fiberglass blades of the turbines, which only a few landfills accept. Industry experts suggest that the future lies in replacing old systems with new and more efficient ones. With fewer wind turbines, the same or more energy can be produced,
reducing environmental costs, as highlighted by the Ministry of Ecological Transition in Madrid. The construction of new installations has a positive aspect, creating job opportunities for operators in many small towns, attracting investments, and fostering development, notes the newspaper El Nacional. Currently, Spain has over 1,300 wind farms...Despite the growth, the wind industry in Europe, including Spain, is facing billion-euro losses, mainly due to competition from China, which has better access to resources and offers lower prices."

Dreams of windmills in the lake will remain half-baked.

(12/13/23) reports: "Pour one out for the Icebreaker wind farm. The Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. (LEEDCo) announced last week that it was shelving plans to build six wind turbines in Lake Erie offshore of Cleveland, Ohio. The nonprofit said the effort, which has struggled to gain traction since its 2009 inception, is indefinitely suspended after losing financing and development partners. The U.S. Department of Energy, which gave LEEDCo a $50 million grant in 2016, revoked the money due to the Icebreaker project’s lack of progress, according to Inside Climate News. The nonprofit developer is refunding about $37 million.Project delays also prompted Fred Olson Renewables, a Norwegian developer which had planned to build and operate the project, to walk away...LEEDCo said its decision is also due to increased interest rates and capital costs. LEEDCo said Icebreaker became 'financially untenable' after the Ohio Power Siting Board in 2020 required the turbines to stop at night between March
and November.The requirement was meant to reduce the risk to migratory birds and bats from spinning turbine blades, although state experts testified the shutdown was unnecessary."

(12/12/23) reports: "Oil and gas executives will have to substantially increase their clean energy investments to overcome a 'trust deficit' with the public about their commitments to addressing climate change, US energy secretary Jennifer Granholm said today. The industry has made some progress in cutting emissions and committing to future cuts, Granholm said today to oil executives serving on the National Petroleum Council. But the sector should expect escalating difficulty related to public opinion until operators successfully cut emissions and invest in clean energy at the scale required to address climate change, she said. 'I think that there's a trust deficit, no doubt,' Granholm said to the council, a committee created to share oil and gas industry input. 'A number of us have been protested off the stage as a result of the impatience that's out there' for moving quickly enough to address climate change."
