Throughout all of Elissa Slotkin's political campaigns, there has always been Rule #1. So today we'd like to take a moment to explain what that means in real terms for this team, and then ask you to chip in to help Elissa defend Michigan's Senate seat.

Here it goes: Back when Elissa first decided to run for public office, she had never been to a political fundraiser. Not one.

It might be hard to believe, but as a former national security expert, she had never attended a political event. It wasn’t her thing. Elissa therefore instinctively understood that one of the reasons so many Americans have lost trust in their government is because of the role that money plays in the political process.

So that's what Rule #1 is all about: Elissa does not accept any money from corporate Political Action Committees. She doesn't want her constituents to ever question why she is voting a certain way, or have any doubt that she is fighting for their interests.

Lots of people in Washington see this as a disadvantage. When she made the decision in 2018, and then stuck with it when she won, she got a ton of angry and annoyed phone calls. It meant she would have to work hard to raise the money and that big corporations couldn’t engage her easily, by paying for access. The same issues are coming up again given the amount of resources it takes to win a statewide Senate campaign.

But for Elissa, Rule #1 is about protecting our democracy. When you take a donation from a for-profit corporation, it makes average citizens question how that money impacts your vote.

Since Elissa is rejecting corporate PAC money, this means we are counting on lots and lots of people contributing what they can to this campaign. And that's why today we are really hoping that you'll make your first online donation.
