This season, give the gift of belonging.

Give the Gift of Belonging this Holiday Season

For over 35 years, Egale Canada has been a leader in the ongoing mission to improve the lives of 2SLGBTQI people in Canada and around the world.

In 2023, with the rise in anti-2SLGBTQI and anti-trans hate, it has been so important for Egale to amplify community voices, raise awareness about the rise in hate, and call upon Canadian institutions and systems to act now.

By conducting research, building educational tools and resources, raising awareness about the issues our communities are facing, and engaging in legal advocacy, we are combatting hate and violence against 2SLGBTQI folks.

However, the fight is not over. Now more than ever, each pillar of our work is needed to achieve inclusion and belonging, and win the fight against anti-2SLGBTQI hate.

This holiday season, please help us to continue combating the hate and violence our communities are facing by giving the greatest gift of all: #TheGiftofBelonging.

Healthcare access experiences and needs among LBQ women, trans, and nonbinary people in Canada

Healthcare access experiences and needs among LBQ women, trans, and nonbinary people in Canada

Have you ever wondered what the healthcare priorities are for lesbian, bi+, and queer (LBQ) women and nonbinary people? What actions can be taken across sectors to address these priorities?

Egale’s new research report, “Healthcare access experiences and needs among LBQ women, trans, and nonbinary people in Canada: A research report” explores these questions, provides recommendations aimed at particular groups (e.g., educators, healthcare practitioners, policymakers), and issues a call-to-action for sectors to work together to improve healthcare access for LBQ women, trans

UR Pride Centre for Sexuality and Gender Diversity v. Government of Saskatchewan et al.

UR Pride Centre for Sexuality and Gender Diversity v. Government of Saskatchewan et al.

From the start, we have said that we will use every tool at our disposal to fight the Saskatchewan government’s harmful school policy legislation.

Standing up for trans and gender diverse youth is our number one priority in this legal battle, and we won’t back down.

Despite the shocking move by the government to use the notwithstanding clause to ram through their harmful legislation, we recently announced updates to the case as we fight to continue the litigation.

Egale at the United Nations Universal Periodic Review in Geneva

Egale at the United Nations Universal Periodic Review in Geneva

Egale was pleased to be in Geneva for Canada’s review under the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process. Last spring, Egale submitted a stakeholder report as part of the lead up to this review process, and was invited to discuss Canada’s human rights record with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, during his recent visit to Ottawa.

During Canada’s review in Geneva, 13 states specifically mentioned the rights of 2SLGBTQI people in Canada in their interventions. A representative from Iceland called on Canada to improve the human rights of intersex people in our country and provided a recommendation that aligns with Egale’s UPR stakeholder submission as well as our ongoing legal case on intersex human rights at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. For more on this, read our news release on intersex humans rights here.

Egale's Ontario Education Leader Summit

Egale’s Ontario Education Leader Summit

Calling all school principals, vice-principals and superintendents in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario.

In January, Egale is hosting in-person Education Leader Summits in Ottawa to hold collaborative conversations about school- and board-wide solutions, scenarios, and educational opportunities for advancing 2SLGBTQI school inclusion.

The summits are designed to be highly informative, engaging, and interactive. Each summit is a three-hour event that places a strong emphasis on knowledge sharing and round table discussions. The end of the summits will include recommended practices for senior educational leaders that will leave participants feeling supported and with tangible next steps to be inclusive leaders.

Resource Spotlight: Intersex Community Hub

Resource Spotlight: Intersex Community Hub

Intersex people in Canada continue to be made invisible societally and face undue harm within medical institutions and Canada’s justice system. Egale Canada is working to combat this in a variety of ways including the creation of the Intersex Community Hub.

The Intersex Community Hub has been created by the intersex community, for the intersex community, as well as parents and caregivers of intersex children. It is a space for members to connect, ask questions, share lived experiences, feel heard, and feel empowered.

Egale in the News

Egale in the News

In November, Egale’s Executive Director, Helen Kennedy was interviewed on CBC’s national program Power & Politics. The interview was about Egale’s statement condemning hateful and harmful comments by Pierre Poilievre.

Poilievere’s recent claims that “radical gender ideology” is being imposed on children is part of a misinformation-fueled hate campaign that is threatening the safety, freedoms, and rights of 2SLGBTQI people, especially those who are Two Spirit, trans, nonbinary, and/or gender non-conforming.
Egale will always speak out to protect the rights and safety of 2SLGBTQI people across our country and around the world.
