PPADMV Newsletter December 2023
Dear PPADMV Supporter,
This year, we've supported each other through difficult losses and shared in the joy of hard-fought victories.

* In April, 1,200 people showed up to protect and defend mifepristone and medication abortion at PPADMV’s DC Rally and Speak Out, featuring speakers from the DC and Baltimore abortion funds, PPM storyteller Ariel, and PPMW storyteller Brittany House.
* In June, over 300 people attended PPADMV’s Dobbs decision anniversary pre-rally, hosted in partnership with PPMW, ACLU, ACLU-DC, and Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly known as NARAL Pro-Choice America).
* PPADMV marched and celebrated Pride from May to October, in areas like the Eastern Shore, District of Columbia, Baltimore City, and St. Mary’s County.

Most recently, the results of the Virginia election affirmed what we've always known — that a huge majority of voters support and will defend access to abortion.

Actions
The PPADMV team collaborated in Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia's grassroot efforts to rally voters, resulting in:
* 450+ volunteers
* 15,000 constituents' doors knocked
* 20,000 phone calls

Impact
Virginia is the only southern state that hasn't enacted an abortion ban since Roe was overturned. In November, the Commonwealth's voters made sure that it stays that way (for now).

Of the key northern Virginia races supported by PPADMV, four of the five PPAV-endorsed candidates — Schuyler Van Valkenburg (D) , Russet Perry (D) , Josh Thomas (D) , and Danica Roem (D) — were victorious.

Pro-abortion rights candidates entered the race defending a slim State Senate majority, and facing a narrow anti-abortion and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) majority in the House of Delegates. After the election, pro-abortion rights members now hold a 21-19 majority in the Virginia Senate and 51-49 majority in the House of Delegates.

Beyond Virginia, key electoral victories were also secured in
* Ohio, where a constitutional amendment was passed ensuring access to abortion and other forms of reproductive health care
* Kentucky, where reproductive rights advocate Andy Beshear (D) won the governorship
* Pennsylvania, where a state Supreme Court candidate won after campaigning on reproductive rights

Looking Ahead
Legislative sessions in both Maryland and Virginia begin on January 10, 2024.
*Voters will see a 2024 Maryland ballot initiative to enshrining the right to reproductive freedom in the state constitution.
*During Virginia's legislative session in January, we hope to see legislators begin the process of enshrining the right to reproductive freedom in the state constitution.

Where policy is made, we'll always stand up and fight, and we've recently expanded our team to have an even greater impact in the coming year. Your support strengthens our efforts to defend sexual and reproductive health care, gender-affirming care, and other vital needs.
