WEEK IN REVIEW

Dear Friend,

I hope you had a good week. As we monitor the situation in Iowa and across the country, I continue to encourage all Iowans to listen to the experts and take commonsense steps to do their part to limit the spread of coronavirus. Everyone—no matter your age or health—can carry the virus and inadvertently help spread it, which is why we all need to take this matter seriously.

Let’s each do our part to protect our seniors and fellow Iowans

This is a critical time for us all to be keeping in mind our more vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbors and to take steps to protect our loved ones. For the senior citizens in our state, and those with underlying health conditions, coronavirus is a very different ballgame. There are members of my own family with conditions that put them at higher risk for severe consequences if they were to be infected by the virus.

Taking calm, commonsense steps to limit the spread is the least we can do to help ensure that our loved ones live their lives fully and that we address this virus as best we can. We will all play an important role in keeping Iowa healthy and in preventing this virus from spreading. Let’s all take this seriously and each do our part to look out for one another.

Working Together to Combat the Coronavirus

It’s going to take a partnership to get through this episode. I’ve been in consistent communication with Governor Kim Reynolds about the steps being taken to keep Iowans safe. This week, I encouraged my colleagues in Congress, as well as officials at the state and local levels, to continue working together to protect Iowans and all Americans from coronavirus.

Grilling EPA Nominee on RFS, Small Refinery Exemption Process

Another important topic on the minds of many Iowans is the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). As always, I’m continuing to be a relentless advocate for Iowa biofuels. This week, I pressed the nominee for deputy administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Doug Benevento, on the recent Tenth Circuit Court decision on the RFS and the future of the small refinery exemption (SRE) program.

I made it clear: “Our farmers and producers are tired of being yanked around by the EPA, and again, these illegal SREs.”

Calling for More Transparency in Federal Spending

Ahead of Sunshine Week, an annual tradition promoting the importance of government transparency, I continued to push my efforts to protect hardworking Iowans’ tax dollars.

On the Senate floor, I highlighted a few of my ‘bright ideas’—like the Billion Dollar Boondoggle Act, which requires full public disclosure of the cost and timeline of mammoth government-funded projects costing billions more than promised and behind schedule, and my SWAG Act, to prohibit tax dollars from being spent on mascots and swag to promote government agencies and programs.

Fortunately, this week I successfully moved my SWAG Act out of Senate committee. There’s zero reason for the federal government to blow a quarter of a million dollars of your hard-earned money on mascots and millions more on needless trinkets and gimmicks. We are now one step closer to curbing Washington’s frivolous PR spending habits and bagging government swag!
