Last month, Professor Susumu Nejima of Toyo University visited the MCB offices.
He is researching Muslim community development and was welcomed by Zara Mohammed. Professor Nejima is involved with the Japan Islamic Trust's Masjid Otsuka and is comparing British and Japanese experiences in providing services like mosques and religious education.
He estimates 250,000 Muslims in Japan, mainly from Indonesia, Pakistan and Bangladesh. A key issue is the lack of Muslim burial spaces since cremation is the norm.
The Trust's post-Fukushima disaster relief put the Muslim presence on the map. The MCB shared 2021 census data on British Muslims. Professor Nejima also visited the East London Mosque.
