John, climate change will not wait for anyone or anything. It will continue to ravage our communities from floods and fires, to asthma and our lung health.
Right now, the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) holds world leaders who have the power to curb climate change and put an end to fossil fuels. As this is going on, we’re seeing plans from Trump and Republicans to gut the biggest climate measure ever passed into law in the United States if they win the majority in Congress and the White House.
The GOP’s climate denialism will leave Americans to deal with the repercussions—not just our environment, but our livelihoods, and health will suffer if we don’t take action now.
In 2022, the cost of climate and weather disasters in the United States totaled more than $165 billion—making it the third costliest year on record. Our carbon emissions continue to rise exponentially despite the need to lower them.
Marginalized communities, which have made the fewest contributions to this crisis, have faced the most devastating impacts to their health and livelihoods. If we don’t put a stop to these fossil fuel companies and Big Oil, we will hit the disastrous 1.5 degree celsius benchmark in the next 5 years.
Climate change affects everything from the likelihood of pandemics, to our lung health, to asthma, to floods and to fires.
