This week, I joined the Rare Disease Congressional Caucus, a bipartisan, bicameral group of legislators with the shared goal of addressing policy issues surrounding rare diseases. I’m glad to join my colleagues to give a voice to people battling lesser-known diseases. It’s important that we hear their challenges and success stories. Making health care more accessible and affordable has always been one of my top priorities. My Prescription Drug Pricing Reduction Act, contains provisions that would specifically help those with rare genetic diseases. I'm also glad to be part of this caucus as we continue to address the coronavirus. I recently gave a floor speech providing an update on the coronavirus in Iowa. You can also find up-to-date information on my website at grassley.senate.gov/coronavirus.
As part of my continued oversight efforts, I sent letters to 77 universities across the country with known active Confucius Institutes on campus. Each school should request an FBI briefing to fully understand the academic research and national security threats posed by these Chinese government-backed organizations operating on campus. U.S. government agencies, including within the Intelligence Community, assert that the communist Chinese government uses Confucius Institutes embedded in our academic institutions as a propaganda tool within the United States. Meeting with federal law enforcement experts and receiving additional information from the FBI is imperative for these schools to fully understand the risks to both their institutions and our national security.
I had the opportunity to meet with city leaders from Iowa this week visiting Washington, D.C. for the League of Cities Conference, including folks from Dubuque, Bettendorf, Ottumwa and Coralville. I always appreciate the opportunity to hear from Iowans and look forward to continuing to partner on city projects in the future.
