Hi all,
In a tiny Idaho county, public education is hurting. Some 31 percent of teachers, counselors and education leaders had left the West Bonner County school district at the end of last school year. And scores of parents opted to homeschool, enroll in another district or learn online.
The district, like many across the U.S., has been caught in the culture wars, leaving schools and students hurting in tangible ways. Laura Pappano, in a piece that’s also in Vanity Fair, takes us deep inside the educational disarray that has resulted, and is emblematic of similar battles elsewhere.
You can count on our in-depth reporting week after week. Thank you for being a Hechinger Report member, and enjoy the holiday season.
