Hello Democrats, Right next door in Texas - a pregnant woman, Kate Cox, was denied the essential care she needs and forced to carry to term a fetus diagnosed with a fatal condition. Thanks to Texas Republicans’ regressive abortion bans, Kate must either jeopardize her health with a high-risk pregnancy or face legal, or even criminal, consequences.
Despite her husband’s plea for an exception to be made in order to allow doctors to terminate her pregnancy and prevent her from going through the trauma of delivering a stillborn fetus that would put her own health at risk, Texas Republicans and their state’s conservative Supreme Court are standing their ground on their desire to control women, their bodies, and their doctors. Right now, she has made the difficult choice to leave Texas and find the care she desperately needs elsewhere.
Thankfully, New Mexico Democrats have protected the right to abortion and reproductive health care. But this developing story from Texas shows how far Republicans would go to deny women health care and control their bodies. From the national level to New Mexico, Republicans want to create a cruel and inhumane future where women are forced to carry even the highest-risk pregnancies to term, even when their lives and health are at stake. We can’t let the GOP’s backwards policies send us back to the Stone Age and impact New Mexico women and their lives. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Republicans have eliminated fundamental rights and robbed women of bodily autonomy in states across the country. We can’t let that happen at home in New Mexico. We must fight to reinstate protections for abortion rights at home and at the national level. Democrats believe that every woman should have autonomy over their own bodies, and their healthcare choices are between themselves and their doctors– NOT politicians.
