Dear Friend,
I lead with love. It's what helps me be the best mom I can be to my teenage son, who is transgender. But living in Texas right now -- where 76 anti-LGBTQ bills were filed during the last legislative session -- I feel like I need to be even more than a supportive parent.
I need to be a “Mama Bear.” You come after my cubs, and I will come after you.
We were one of the first families in Texas to be unfairly investigated by CPS after our Attorney General accused parents like me of being child abusers for simply loving and affirming our kids. My husband and I were terrified. But we weren't going to be silenced. When GLAAD asked us to share our story in a PSA that millions of Americans would see, we said yes. Let's get to know each other, because it's hard to hate up close.

So it's easy to understand how misinformation about LGBTQ people on television, news, and social media can fuel confusion, hate, and even violence.

Seeing the spark in my son's eyes when he knows he is wholly loved and can focus on being a kid is the most important thing to me as a mom.
