Dear John,
Did you know that this year, 266 playwrights submitted one-act plays about reproductive justice to A is For’s Playwriting Contest? During a time when abortion rights are being challenged on a daily basis, artists are eager to do something. So, they write, and introduce us to stories and characters that humanize the experience of abortion.
A is For is honored to amplify their important work.
Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, 15 states have banned abortion care, leaving millions of people without access in their own communities to essential healthcare. These bans and attacks on our bodily autonomy harm all of us.
Until abortion care is free and accessible to anyone who needs or wants it, A is For remains committed to eradicating abortion stigma — the very stigma that made these policies a stark reality — through art.
With your help, over the past year A is For has:
- received 266 one-act plays about reproductive justice and abortion access from across the country during our Third Annual Playwriting Contest.
- featured the readings of our 3 winning plays during the ONE ACT Play Festival at the Signature Theatre in NYC, sharing these works live, in-person, with an amazing community of theatre and reproductive justice supporters!
-
donated 1,082 copies of our stigma-busting comic book, Buckle Up: Abortion Stories from the Road to more than 40 abortion clinics, educational institutions, and reproductive justice organizations across 20 states.
In addition to creating art about abortion, A is For remains focused on creating access to abortion. Our Beneficiary Program donates money to clinics in the states with the most restrictive abortion policies. This year, in partnership with Broadway Care/Equity Fights AIDS, A is For donated $30,000 to 12 abortion clinics and reproductive justice organizations across the country.
To continue this stigma-busting work, A is For needs your help.
With a year-end gift to A is For, we will be able to sustain and grow our creative programs as we provide more opportunities for artists, reach wider audiences, and add to our list of Beneficiary organizations.
At this crucial moment, join A is For at the intersection of art and reproductive justice.
