Dear City Limits friends,
As we reach the end of 2023, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the stories we’ve published for City Within a City: Covering NYCHA, bridging the news and information gap in the largest public housing community. Let me take you through some of the highlights: |
• |
As part of a $930 million transaction, what federal officials say is the largest yet, NYCHA added the more than 2,000 apartments at the Edenwald Houses to its portfolio of units that have been converted to PACT, the authority’s initiative that partners with private developers to access funds for repairs. |
• |
After a more than year-long push from lawyers with the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), the housing authority is publishing all of its regulations in one document, which will be publicly available for the first time. |

We’ve seen how our coverage can make a difference. For instance, when we previously wrote about the plight of a woman in a shelter who’d been waiting more than 10 months to move into the NYCHA apartment she’d been approved for, she received the keys to her new home the very next day. This demonstrates the real-world impact of journalism, and we’ve continued to report on the mounting vacancies in public housing since. |

Today, amidst the city’s housing crisis, an unprecedented rise in homelessness, and a growing lack of affordable housing, our work has never been more important. From now until December 31, NewsMatch will double your donation up to $1,000. |
We need to raise $30,000 by Dec. 31 and we’re 80% there!
Your generous donation will help drive positive change and advocate for a better future for NYCHA residents.
With gratitude,
Tatyana Turner
