Melinda French Gates: Women Need Safety Nets For The Childcare Cliff - Forbes

The way Melinda French Gates looks at it, the state of female power in 2023 was a matter of sliding doors. “If you slide one door, and you look through it, you can see a lot of progress for women,” says the billionaire philanthropist, citing victories in the continuing battle for reproductive choice and Nobel Prizes awarded to women. “And then if you slide another door, you say, ‘Wow, there’s still so many difficulties for women.’”

Among the most pressing is the lack of childcare help. So many women in the U.S. and around the world have such little structural support in caring for their families that they’re often forced to devote their time and money to work that doesn’t pay at the expense of work that does.

“We still expect women to do the unpaid labor that our societies are built on the backs of, and our economies are built on the backs of,” French Gates, No. 10 on this year’s list of the World’s Most Powerful Women, told Forbes in an exclusive conversation. “We have got to solve the caregiving-problems crisis around the world.”

China’s leader, Xi Jinping, is fond of weather-related and nautical metaphors. He often talks of fierce storms that could impede the country’s rise. In recent months, Mr Xi has warned officials to brace for “numerous major tests” amid “high winds, rough seas and daunting waves”. These are certainly testing times for the team he installed in late 2022 and early in 2023 to help him navigate the country’s growing economic, diplomatic and social challenges. Two prominent members of the team have already fallen. The coming year will not be plain sailing for Mr Xi’s other underlings.

The president might have been hoping to breathe a sigh of relief in 2023. His sweeping reshuffle of the top echelons of government—and, a few months earlier, of the Communist Party’s high command—had surrounded him with people he knew well and trusted. His abandonment late in 2022 of China’s draconian “zero-covid” approach to tackling the pandemic had led to a surge of deaths, but officials were confident that an economic rebound would help to buoy the public mood.

But growth failed to reignite. And by summer, flaws were appearing in Mr Xi’s political arrangements. First the foreign minister, Qin Gang, disappeared. A few weeks later the defence minister, General Li Shangfu, followed suit. Such a purge had not been seen in years.

One in five young Americans thinks the Holocaust is a myth - The Economist

On December 5th, for over five hours, lawmakers grilled the presidents of elite universities in a congressional hearing about antisemitism on college campuses. In one of the testiest exchanges a Republican congresswoman, Elise Stefanik, asked whether “calling for the genocide of Jews” violates university rules. It is “context-dependent”, replied Liz Magill, the president of the University of Pennsylvania. Clips of the exchange went viral on X, formerly Twitter. Yad Vashem, a Holocaust museum and research centre, issued a condemnation and stressed the importance of “raising awareness about the history of antisemitism and the Holocaust”.

A new poll from YouGov/The Economist suggests that Yad Vashem has its work cut out. Young Americans—or at least the subset of them who take part in surveys—appear to be remarkably ignorant about one of modern history’s greatest crimes. Some 20% of respondents aged 18-29 think that the Holocaust is a myth, compared with 8% of those aged 30-44 (see chart). An additional 30% of young Americans said they do not know whether the Holocaust is a myth. Many respondents espouse the canard that Jews wield too much power in America: young people are nearly five times more likely to think this than are those aged 65 and older (28% versus 6%).

Now for the harder part: why do some young Americans embrace such views? Perhaps surprisingly, education levels do not appear to be the culprit. In our poll, the proportion of respondents who believe that the Holocaust is a myth is similar across all levels of education.

Argentina's newly-elected, dollar-loving president Javier Milei made his inaugural speech Sunday, warning his country to prepare for a painful fiscal shock as he bids to rein in sky-high inflation and steer the economy away from its sixth recession in 10 years.

"There is no alternative to a shock adjustment," Milei said, according to a translation by Reuters.

"There is no money," he repeatedly told a crowd in Buenos Aires, a phrase he's previously used to justify his plans for aggressive economic reforms.
