Supreme Court will consider special counsel's request to rule on Trump's immunity in Jan. 6 case
Just hours after special counsel Jack Smith's team issued the expedited request, the conservative-packed Supreme Court agreed to step in and decide the issue of presidential immunity regarding Donald Trump's federal election interference charges. At issue is whether or not lower court Judge Tanya Chutkan's ruling — in which she rejected the serially indicted grifter's claim to "absolute immunity" for trying to overturn the 2020 election — will stand. The question, in simplest terms, is whether or not presidents are above the law.

VIDEO OF THE DAY: State Supreme Court issues horrific, nightmare ruling
Kate Cox, a Texan mother of two who is 20 weeks pregnant with a fetus tragically facing a brutal diagnosis — trisomy 18 — left her state to seek an emergency abortion while still waiting to hear from the state Supreme Court if she'd be allowed to get one locally. Cox's decision to seek the emergency procedure out of state proved wise, because shortly after her departure the conservative-stacked court sided with, of all people, Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, who claimed she hadn't adequately proved her case. Roughly half of trisomy 18 pregnancies result in stillbirths. Less than 10% of the babies that survive birth don't make it to their first birthday. Those that do suffer profound, debilitating health problems and rarely reach adulthood. Enduring a trisomy 18 pregnancy is a nightmare in its own right, and that's without radical right-wing goons declaring total agency over your body. The horrifying saga highlights just how deadly and draconian the Lone Star State's reproductive policies have become under Republican leadership and in the wake of the US Supreme Court's overturning of Roe v. Wade last year.

ALERT: McConnell on the cusp of convincing Senate Democrats to sell out human rights
United We Dream: Senate Republicans are primed to score one of their biggest victories on one of their most insidious agenda items. In negotiations for war aid, Democrats are signaling a willingness to trade away immigrant and asylum protections — a move that would immediately condemn many to death and untold masses to a life of suffering. It is absolutely unacceptable for Democratic leaders to enable this Trumpian scheme to persecute those in the most need. Please add your name to demand Democrats stay strong against the MAGA agenda!
George Santos in talks with federal prosecutors about possible plea deal, court records show
George Santos has been making quite a splash on Cameo, giving the false impression that it's nothing but smooth sailing ahead for the recently expelled congressman. In reality, he's facing a slew of federal charges, including wire fraud and money laundering. Court records have revealed that Santos has entered into talks with federal prosecutors in the hopes of striking a plea deal and avoiding a trial. Whether or not any possible deal will necessitate prison time for the serial fabulist remains to be seen.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer goes to bat for abortion rights in Michigan
The ascendant Democratic star — already being touted by some as a possible 2028 White House contender — repealed a state law that required women to have a separate rider on their insurance plans for abortion coverage, a practice that activists appropriately dubbed "rape insurance." It's the latest in a string of moves Whitmer has made on reproductive rights after voters enshrined abortion rights in the state constitution last year following the MAGA-stacked Supreme Court's disastrous overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Elise Stefanik accused of plagiarizing antisemitism letter
Democratic Congresswoman Kathy Manning accused Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of copying sections of her letter word-for-word that criticized college presidents for their testimony about on-campus antisemitism, sullying the MAGA minion's victory lap in the wake of last week's testimony from embattled university presidents, one of whom resigned days later. Stefanik, a graduate of Harvard who should know a thing or two about plagiarism, had shared detailed and articulate thoughts on the dangers of antisemitism on university campuses and the limits of free speech. Just one problem, though — they apparently weren't hers.

A group of California children sue the EPA in federal court to secure their future
A group of children, who range in age from 8 to 17, have filed a constitutional climate case in federal court against the Environmental Protection Agency, alleging it has harmed children’s health and welfare for decades. They assert that the EPA "intentionally allows" planet-warming pollution to come from the sources it regulates, such as vehicles and heavy-duty trucks, power plants, and oil and gas wells. Crucially, the firm representing the plaintiffs, Our Children’s Trust, argued and won a high-profile climate case in Montana last year — the first constitutional climate trial in the US. With some hard work and a little luck, this could be the beginning of a growing campaign to successfully reshape the country for the better. The kids are alright.

Project Veritas CEO jumps ship after finding "evidence of past illegality"
Hannah Giles, the CEO of the once-powerful right-wing smear outfit, announced her resignation "effective immediately" on Monday, saying she’d unwittingly "stepped into an unsalvageable mess" upon taking the job earlier this year. Giles was named the group’s chief executive four months after founder and chief provocateur James O’Keefe was fired for gross financial malfeasance. In a statement posted to Elon Musk's cesspit of a social network, Giles claimed she’d taken over an organization "wrought with strong evidence of past illegality and past financial improprieties" — evidence she has since handed over to law enforcement.
Biden pledges Israel support at Hanukkah event but delivers warning on public opinion
President Biden — who has a long history as a friend of the Jewish state — touted his "unshakeable" support for "the safety of the Jewish people and the security of Israel and its right to exist," but he also offered a stark warning about the volatility of public opinion. "We’ll continue to provide military assistance to Israel until they get rid of Hamas, but we have to be careful — they have to be careful," Biden told those gathered for a Hanukkah reception at the White House Monday night. "The whole world’s public opinion can shift overnight, we can’t let that happen." Biden's comments come as an emergency aid package that would provide funding for Israel and Ukraine remains mired by Republicans in Congress and lawmakers face pressure to act amid a new wave of antisemitism in the US as the brutal Israel-Hamas war enters its third month.
Endangered species list grows by 2,000. Climate change is part of the problem
The United Nations climate conference in the United Arab Emirates delivered mostly bad news as leaders of the International Union for Conservation of Nature updated their Red List of Threatened Species, a tracker of biodiversity around the globe. The list includes information on 157,000 species, about 7,000 more than last year's update. The IUCN said just over 44,000 species are threatened with extinction. That's roughly 2,000 more than last year. The tragic numbers are a direct result of climate change making environments more deadly for thousands of species and accelerating the precipitous decline in the number of plants and animals on Earth. Meanwhile, the Republican Party continues to dither, while its loudest and most obnoxious members insist that climate change is some sort of hoax.
