A Sponsored Message From Alliance Defending Freedom

Brave American Endures 10+ Years in Court. Stand with Him.

SIGN THE STATEMENT

Friend: Can you imagine spending more than a decade in court to defend the freedom to express what you believe?

That’s what has happened to Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips.

And because the Colorado Court of Appeals ruled against Jack in early 2023, he’s facing more time in court.

More time away from the cake shop he built, doing what he loves: designing cakes. More time in the spotlight facing scrutiny. And more time standing up for the freedom to express what he believes without facing government punishment.

And he has to do this because two Colorado state courts held that state law may force Jack to create a custom cake celebrating a “gender transition.”

What’s happened to Jack is a tale of intolerance—the intolerance of radical activists targeting, harassing, and punishing those who disagree with their beliefs.

As an American concerned about our Constitution and protecting our First Amendment freedoms, we know you’re likely shocked by what’s happened to Jack.

Alliance Defending Freedom has appealed this decision to the Colorado Supreme Court, which will hear Jack’s case in 2024.

Jack needs all the support he can get—will you sign our Statement of Support for Jack to show that you stand with him and all Americans committed to protecting free speech?

Jack’s Story

Jack was targeted in 2012 because he cannot create a custom cake celebrating a same-sex wedding and express a message that he disagrees with. Jack cannot violate his conscience—and he shouldn’t be forced to. No American should.

But, after two wins, including one win at the U.S. Supreme Court, attacks on Jack still haven’t stopped. He continues to be harassed.

A Colorado trial court punished him for not designing a custom cake that would celebrate a “gender transition.” Then, earlier this year, an appeals court affirmed that decision. ADF attorneys are appealing this decision to the Colorado Supreme Court.

The request Jack is being targeted for right now came from an activist attorney who said, under oath, the attorney wanted to “[c]orrect the errors of [Jack’s] thinking.”

Yet, the Colorado Court of Appeals ruled in favor of this attorney, against Jack—and the freedoms of every American.

What's Next for Jack?

We’re not going to quit on Jack, and we’re asking that you don’t either. We will continue to defend Jack’s rights in this critical lawsuit to the very end.

But the cruelty must stop.

In June, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark decision in favor of free speech in the case of 303 Creative v. Elenis. ADF took the case all the way to the high court on behalf of Lorie Smith, a Denver-area graphic artist and web designer. The Supreme Court ruled that the government cannot force Americans to express things they don’t believe.

We are urging the Colorado Supreme Court to reverse the ruling against Jack in light of what the U.S. Supreme Court said in 303 Creative.

Can you imagine the toll this harassment has placed on Jack?

He’s lost years to litigation, most of his employees, and his wedding business, not to mention the personal toll on his family. Jack has watched his wife and daughter be grilled by opposing attorneys in court. And he and his family have faced serious threats of violence.

Your voice matters.

Sign our Statement of Support for Jack today, which will mean a lot to him and show your commitment to protecting our First Amendment freedoms.

We won’t back down. And we won’t give up on securing the right of every American to freely express what they believe.

But we can’t do that without the help of you and other dedicated friends of freedom.

P.S. Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips has been targeted and punished for declining to design a custom cake that expresses a message of support for a “gender transition.” This is wrong.
