Joint Letter: Urgent Medical Care Needed For Imprisoned Bahraini Opposition Leader
On 11 December 2023, Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB), along with 15 other human rights organizations, signed a joint letter calling on the King and Crown Prince of Bahrain to urgently and unconditionally release the prominent political dissident in Bahrain, Hassan Mushaima. The letter called for ensuring that the 75 years old political activist imprisoned for exercising his right to freedom of association and expression receives urgent and appropriate medical care, in light of the serious threat to his health.
Mujtaba AbdulHusain Ali Ahmed was a 16-year-old high school student when he and his friend Husain Ahmed Habib Darrab were arrested at the latter’s grandfather’s house on 27 August 2019 without a warrant. He was subjected to torture, enforced disappearance, solitary confinement, and reprisal, and has been denied his right to a fair retrial before the Children Restorative Justice Court. He is currently held in Jau Prison, serving an 18-year and 7-month prison sentence resulting from an unfair trial.
Ahmed Mansoor: A Symbol of Struggle for Human Rights in the UAE Ahead of COP28
Ahmed Mansoor, a prominent human rights defender in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has faced relentless persecution due to his unwavering advocacy for human rights. His case stands as a distressing emblem of the struggles faced by activists in the UAE, shedding light on the challenges of championing fundamental rights in the region.
Mansoor’s arrest in March 2017, rooted in his social media activities, underscored the UAE’s intolerance towards dissenting voices. His imprisonment for speaking out against human rights abuses echoes the plight of many silenced activists in the country. Despite his award-winning efforts and recognition in the field of human rights, he became a symbol of the crackdown on freedom of expression in the UAE.
