As the president of the Poynter Institute since 2017, and previously as editor and vice president of the Tampa Bay Times, I have witnessed extraordinary, fast-paced change in the world of journalism and media. The volume of information we get can be helpful. Too often it's harmful.
Poynter’s role has become even more pivotal to ensuring that journalism remains a vital service and resource to help people participate in democracy, locally and globally. I continue to believe that respectful debate and expressing honest differences are essential to the success of an open society. The erosion of fact-based expression can undermine it.
As an optimist, I say we must lead rather than lament. I believe Poynter through training to improve journalism and the sustainability of local news organizations makes a difference. I'm enormously proud of the work Poynter accomplishes through PolitiFact, the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership, MediaWise, and the International Fact-Checking Network.
