We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Kimberly Fairbanks Klinger. (Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected]).
Congratulations to Kimberly for identifying the Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens). This was a tricky one because this bird looks very similar to the Great Crested Flycatcher. According to All About Birds, the Ash-throated Flycatcher is smaller and paler than the Great Crested, with a shorter, thinner, and darker beak. This species is a west coast bird, adapted to life in the desert, but a few have been seen in Virginia this month. The Ash-throated Flycatcher is a rare but regular vagrant to the East Coast. Individuals turn up nearly every year across the U.S. and they have been found in all coastal states and provinces.
