We’re in the final hours of the COP28 climate conference. We thought we were the closest we've ever been to an international agreement to end coal, oil and gas. But now, that agreement has gone up in smoke.
As it stands right now, the COP draft agreement is BAD: it won't keep our planet and people safe. Even Toeolesulusulu Schuster, the chair of the Alliance of Small Island States, said that this agreement is a “death sentence” for his people and small island nations around the world.1
But it’s never over until it’s over. We can still get our demands for a fast, fair phaseout of fossil fuels over the line, but we need your help. The U.S. must get behind the small island states and hold the line for a fast and fair phaseout of fossil fuels.
To make that happen, we need to pile the pressure on one of the most key delegations at COP: our own.
The U.S. has stalled and played diplomatic games while letting Saudi Arabia take the blame. However, any agreement requires the support of the U.S., so it is critical that they step up and walk the talk. If they really support a fossil fuel phaseout, they will hold the line for a better COP text.
The most effective way to get Biden’s Climate Team to stop pretending to be a climate leader and actually be one, right now, is on social media — which their teams are monitoring 24/7.
Or, if you have a moment to make an even bigger impact, please comment on their posts with your own and make our call too loud to ignore — it will only take two minutes.
We know that Biden’s Climate Team is influenced by what we do.
After nearly 30 years of COPs, the fact that they’re even talking about phasing out fossil fuels is because of the thousands of letters, messages, calls and posts they received from all of us.
Our activists are on the ground, right now, following the U.S. delegation asking them to really commit to ending coal, oil and gas. And our media experts are briefing the press. Help us make this demand even louder by flooding their social media channels.
We have come too far and fought too hard to lose our chance to keep 1.5 alive and begin the phaseout of all fossil fuels.
Global South countries on the frontlines of the climate crisis are leading the way for us at COP28. They are loudly calling for a full, fast, and fair phaseout of all fossil fuels, a powering up of renewables, a fully supported finance package for the most vulnerable countries, and a more ambitious adaptation plan.
In solidarity,
