Team,
I'm writing once again to share that our client Kate Cox has been forced to flee her home state of Texas to get the time-sensitive abortion care she needed to protect her health and future fertility.
Kate's case shows exactly why judges and politicians should not be making health care decisions for pregnant people. And it's why our team at the Center for Reproductive Rights is so committed to ensuring that everyone, everywhere has access to critical, life-preserving abortion care.
Anti-abortion politicians claim that abortion bans and medical exceptions protect the health and well-being of pregnant people, but they do the exact opposite. They push care further out of reach and force pregnant people to flee their communities to access the health care they need and deserve. No one should ever have to beg a court to receive doctor-recommended health care.
Last week, we requested relief for Kate and were hopeful when a state court ruled in her favor, allowing her to access abortion care in Texas. Within hours of that ruling, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton asked the Texas Supreme Court to block the order and issued a letter threatening to prosecute any doctor who gave Kate an abortion. The Texas Supreme Court stepped in to halt the trial court's order, further delaying Kate’s access to the urgent care she needed to preserve her health and future fertility.
Here at the Center, we will never stop fighting for a world where access to reproductive health care isn't dependent upon where you live. Are you with us?
In solidarity,
Nancy Northup
