Unjustifiable Barriers: Voting As an American With Disabilities ([link removed])
By Paige Anderholm
Here are some SCOTUS updates.
* Special Counsel Jack Smith asked ([link removed]) the U.S. Supreme Court to immediately decide whether former President Donald Trump has immunity from criminal prosecution for his attempts to subvert the 2020 election.
* Texas voters asked ([link removed]) the Supreme Court to review a lawsuit challenging a state law requiring anyone under the age of 65 to have a qualifying excuse to vote by mail. The voters argue the law discriminates based on age, violating the 26th Amendment.
* The Supreme Court did not announce whether it would review more voting rights cases this term. Matters before the Court involve Washington's ([link removed]) legislative map and Arkansas' ([link removed]) congressional map.
Here are some other updates.
* Thirteen Republican-led states filed ([link removed]) a brief in the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals supporting Louisiana's argument that voters cannot sue to enforce Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, further escalating GOP attacks on the landmark civil rights legislation.
* Wisconsin Secretary of State Sarah Godlewsk (D) called ([link removed]) for Republican Bob Spindell to be removed from the Wisconsin Elections Commission for serving as a fake Trump elector in the 2020 election. Learn more about Spindell here ([link removed]) .
Here’s what's coming up.
* Tomorrow is the deadline for voters and civil rights groups to object to Georgia's new maps ([link removed]) in federal court. If objections are filed, the court will hold a hearing on Dec. 20 to determine whether the new districts violate the Voting Rights Act.
