John --
The coronavirus pandemic has become a full-scale public health crisis for our country, and it has now reached Alaska with our state reporting its first confirmed case. I know many of you are worried for your health and the health of your friends and family.
The House of Representatives has introduced the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which would help working families with the medical and monetary cost of COVID-19. I strongly urge Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to take up that bill when it is passed in the House and for Senator Dan Sullivan to vote yes on it.
As a doctor with a master's degree in public health, I’ve been appalled by the haphazard response and lack of clear information. I’m worried for many of my friends and family who are vulnerable, and I’m sure you are too.
That’s why I've recorded a video on Facebook with some crucial, practical steps we can all take to reduce the severity of this pandemic and keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.

I'll also be doing my best to answer questions in the comments on this video or via email at

If you don't have time to watch the video, here some basic steps we can all take:
-
Wash your hands: It’s said often, but washing your hands frequently and for at least 20 seconds is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from respiratory illnesses like the flu or coronavirus.
-
Stay home if you’re sick: If you’re feeling ill or have a fever, stay home. Do your part to keep others safe by not exposing them to your sickness.
-
Cough or sneeze into your elbow, a handkerchief, or tissue: This will help guard against the spread of respiratory droplets that can spread viruses.
-
Practice social distancing: Consider canceling non-essential travel, limit social gatherings, and work from home if you can.
Alaskans are tough, resilient people.
I know we will get through this if we each do our part to help keep our communities safe and healthy.
Thank you,
Dr. Al Gross
