Do you remember the great figures of the GOP — the leaders they idolized, whose example they looked to for guidance?

Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, and John McCain come to mind.

Leaders who we may have disagreed with, true. But leaders who largely stood up for the principles of liberal democracy and freedom against dictators, authoritarians, and ideologues.

The Grand Old Party is something else today.

The Heritage Foundation — the foundational think tank in the conservative movement — is hosting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban (a repressive dictator and darling of the MAGA-right) and Republican members of Congress. Their goal is to end American and European funding for Ukraine’s defense.

It’s clear now — beyond any doubt — that the GOP is working hand-in-hand with authoritarian leaders to support Vladimir Putin’s illegal, unprovoked war on Ukraine.
