John,
This is not a donation request or a survey request, but a request for unity.
Please read on.
As you are no doubt aware, coronavirus is greatly impacting the lives of
many—our health, concerns for loved ones, fears of the future, jobs, and
confidence in the economy. This situation may continue for a time, and I want
to assure you that I am working hard to gather information about this threat
and mitigate its impact on our lives. As I have said since I was first elected
in 2016, we are all Americans first and this is a critical time for unity,
community, and teamwork.
Here’s what we know and what we’ve done:
* Coronavirus spreads more easily and is more lethal than the flu
* This is a worldwide pandemic and the United States is not immune
* Congress’ first action was to pass $8.3 billion in supplemental funding to
speed up vaccine research, improve treatments, and strengthen CDC efforts
* Congress is spending funds to increase testing kit production to four
million kits per week
* The President is removing the red tape to mass produce and use these test
kits
* We’ve had to remove regulations that were in place to speed up delivery of
these kits
* Disaster assistance loans are being offered to impacted small businesses
* The agencies working on this threat are well-funded
* In the past five years:
* CDC funding has increased 24%
* NIH funding has increased 39%
* Infectious Disease Response funding has increased 70%
* President Trump and his team are working hard to respond to this threat
* The travel bans on China bought us valuable time that we’re using now
* Congress is working on another bill with the goal of helping those who have
had their employment impacted or need to care for their children while schools
are closed
* Some in Congress are attempting to use this bill to get their political
priorities passed, but this is not the time to play politics – I am working
toward a clean funding bill
* We are working on a compromise to ensure we have a safety net through this
pandemic and economic disruption
* Our medical teams need respirators, and Senator Fischer and I are working
together to renew liability protections so we can get our front-line folks the
tools they need
* UNMC is a very strong ally in this fight and is working hard for a vaccine
* Our Governor and local Mayors are working hard to reduce risk and prevent
the spread of coronavirus, and I am grateful for their leadership
I have confidence in our rapid response infrastructure to tackle this threat.
It may take time, and there will be impacts to our daily lives. However,
community and business leaders are working with government and medical
facilities to find solutions for all who are impacted. While we don’t yet know
what this will look like, we are absolutely taking this threat seriously and
will not rest until we have a path forward.
Each and every one of us has our own role to play in the suppression of this
virus. Eliminating handshakes, practicing proper hygiene, frequent hand
washing, avoiding touching the face, and covering coughs and sneezes are
extremely important habits to develop in the days and weeks ahead. If you feel
unwell, stay home from work and do not visit locations with groups of people.
Keep calm and prepare cautiously.
The United States is the strongest nation in the world. No other country can
compete with our innovation or tenacity. We can – and will – overcome this
threat, and we will do it together. Thirty years in the Air Force, my
experience as a commander, and my study of history has taught me that we are
stronger every time when united, and weaker when divided. Our team is doing all
we know to ensure we are prepared and able to face this threat head on.
To all of you in the community who are finding ways to help others through
your actions and prayers, I am grateful.
Sincerely,
Don Bacon
