Kevin McCarthy is the ONLY person ever voted out as speaker of the House of Representatives.
(So far, anyway. But I’m guessing his successor, Rep. Mike Johnson, sleeps with one eye open.)
According to news reports, McCarthy has had trouble (re)acclimating to life as just another member of Congress after losing the perks of speakership.
Even his famously (?) sunny disposition is said to have clouded over.
So it was no surprise when McCarthy announced that he intends to leave Congress at the end of this month, a full year before completing the term he was elected to serve.
Kevin McCarthy’s “achievements” in politics include:
- Being one of the all-time great corporate shills in Congress. (An “accolade” for which there is, sadly, abundant and fierce competition).
- Being as prostrate and servile to Donald Trump as anyone on Capitol Hill. (Remember, Trump openly refers to McCarthy as “My Kevin.”)
- Being just fine with Republican schemes to dismantle democracy. (Including by challenging the 2020 election even though he knew the result was valid.)
Now, Kevin McCarthy will quite likely land on his feet.
There could be a high-paid lobbying gig for some industry front group.
There could be lucrative roles providing “strategic advice” to Big Business.
There could be a six-figure book deal.
There could be cushy spots on the boards of multinational corporations.
But before he gets those and/or other rewards he does not deserve, we have a “farewell” message for Kevin McCarthy:
You have functioned as a corporate shill, a Trump bootlicker, and an enemy of democracy. You have pushed destructive policies and enabled authoritarian forces. That’s some legacy, Kevin. Good riddance, and please DO let the door hit you on the way out.
