I have deep concern and disagreement with the recent decision by the United States to veto a UN resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. The situation in the region is dire, and the suffering of innocent civilians on both sides demands urgent attention and action.
The veto of the resolution, which had widespread international support, sends a troubling message about our commitment to humanitarian principles and the pursuit of peace. The ongoing violence has resulted in the loss of countless lives, and the international community must unite to bring about an immediate end to the hostilities.
My ambition is to be a leader who facilitates the establishment of a Palestinian state. Beyond my identity as a Jewish American, I see myself as a human being deeply disturbed and appalled by the persistent cycle of violence perpetrated by successive generations on the same destructive path.
I envision a future where Palestinians and Israelis elect governments committed to peace. It is my fervent hope that our generation becomes the catalyst for transformative change. Until that happens, a sense of security will elude us, our children, and the global community.
I want to see Palestinians choose a government of peace, and I want to see Israelis choose a government of peace.
I am also deeply troubled by reports that the Biden administration has authorized the sale of about 14,000 tank shells to Israel without congressional review. Such significant decisions must undergo thorough congressional oversight to ensure accountability and transparency. It flies in the face of separation of powers.
I urge the president to reconsider these decisions and advocate for:
- Immediate Ceasefire: Both Israel and Hamas should commit to a mutual and immediate ceasefire to prevent further loss of innocent lives. All hostages should be released.
-
International Peacekeeping Force: A multinational peacekeeping force should be deployed to Gaza to support humanitarian efforts and maintain security. It should not include American or Israeli forces.
- Diplomatic Engagement: The United States should actively engage in diplomatic efforts to facilitate a lasting and just resolution to the conflict.
- Congressional Oversight: Critical decisions, such as arms sales, should undergo congressional review to ensure accountability and transparency.
It is crucial that we take decisive steps to break the cycle of violence and pave the way for a future of peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians. I believe that our generation can be the catalyst for positive change, and I implore you to use your influence to advocate for an immediate ceasefire and increased congressional oversight.
