COVID-19 Disruptions To Care in Latin America

In the December issue of Health Affairs, Cristian Herrera of the World Bank and his team of coauthors examine how eight Latin American countries responded to routine health service disruption ([link removed] ) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through a series of interviews with policy makers and health care managers from Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, the researchers identify themes related to impacts on the provision of routine health services, barriers to maintaining routine health services, and innovative strategies to sustain and recover services.

Herrera and coauthors find that primary health care was one of the most disrupted types of health services; preexisting structural deficiencies in health care systems were revealed during the pandemic.

They conclude that in the short term, future policies should aim to recover postponed services, and medium- and long-term efforts should aim toward the development of more-resilient health care systems.

This series features policy analysis, proposals, and commentary that will inform policies on the state and federal levels to understand and advance models for accountable care.

Begun in early 2023, the series includes articles exploring the evidence base (and gaps in our knowledge) and the range of views on various key issues—all with the aim of enhancing the national conversation on accountable care and eliciting thoughtful responses from leaders in the public and private sectors.

Thanks to ongoing support from Arnold Ventures ([link removed] ) , we are able to reissue our call for submissions ([link removed] ) for this series. We will accept submissions until December 2024.
