When NhRP Staff Attorney Jake Davis visited the chimpanzees at the DeYoung Family Zoo in August 2023, one thing became abundantly clear: this not an appropriate place for chimpanzees. He heard at least one chimpanzee screaming and banging on the walls, and saw another violently shaking the chain-link fence of one of the chimp enclosures.
Seven chimpanzees live inside two caged enclosures at this small roadside zoo in Michigan—the same roadside zoo where the NhRP’s first client, Tommy, was held during the last few years before his death. All of these individuals can think, feel, and act autonomously, and they have complex social and physical needs. Right now, their needs are not being met, and these chimpanzees are suffering because of it. That’s why we filed our latest case on their behalf, demanding that the courts recognize their right to liberty and order their release to a sanctuary. |
As we continue to lament Tommy’s loss, we’re heartened by the outpouring of support for Tommy and our new chimpanzee clients. Thank you, as always, for being on their side! |
