In a vote of 221-197, the House of Representatives voted last week to prohibit the EPA from maintaining current or strengthening future tailpipe emissions standards for vehicles.

How did we get here? Former President Trump granted a favor to Big Oil by gutting our nation’s successful Cleaner Car Standards, a critical tool in the fight against climate change. His decision exacerbated racial inequities by putting low-wealth and communities of color who disproportionately live near freight depots and congested roadways at further risk of respiratory illnesses and other serious health conditions.

Now, these same polluting corporations are pulling out all the stops, spending heavily on lobbying the Biden administration and Congress to maintain their ability to pollute our communities and environment. With this vote, the House of Representatives has chosen to do Big Oil’s bidding.

We need to ensure that people’s — not polluters’ — voices are heard loud and clear by our elected officials. We need phones to be ringing off the hook. We need emails pouring into congressional offices from constituents. We need to rally support for protecting our health and environment in Washington D.C. and in states and districts across the country.
