Members of the New Hampshire GOP (including Rep. Testerman, Rep. Sellers, and Sen. Gendreau, who is a WOMAN who won her last election by less than 3,000 votes) have pre-filed a bill that would ban abortion at 15 DAYS. No, not weeks. 15 DAYS in gestational age. If you know anything about basic biology and the reproductive cycle, this idea would understandably confuse you (and you'd know more than a lot of GOP lawmakers writing these bills.) 15 days of "pregnancy" is calculated after the last menstrual cycle a woman has experienced. So, after 15 days...someone may not even have an implanted pregnancy in the uterus, which allows for a pregnancy to continue. On occasion, those "pregnancies" don't even make it to the uterine wall. But all of this is just too much to ask lawmakers to know when they are trying to pass reproductive bans and barriers to healthcare for the American public. The real threat here is the underlying message that Republicans are sending to their constituents - they will target reproductive care at such an early stage that abortions are, effectively, banned. They may use language like "gestational age" without knowing how it plays out in reality and affects a person and their body. They ignorantly assume that 6-week bans allow plenty of time for people to plan for a possible out-of-state procedure involving travel, time off of work, and potential child care. They create laws that placate a religious ideology instead of basic science and the real world. In all of this, they are attacking our healthcare, our choices, and our freedom. This issue should motivate us all to reject the radical right and vote out these kinds of politicians. Bills and political attempts like this should move us all to register, donate, and fight.
