(WASHINGTON, DC - Monday December 11, 2023) – The Board of Directors of OpenSecrets (OS) proudly announces the appointment of Hilary Braseth as its incoming Executive Director, effective January 16. As the nation enters a pivotal presidential primary season, Braseth's technology policy, product, and innovation background position her as the ideal leader to guide OpenSecrets on its mission to enhance transparency, accountability and representation in politics and government.
Daniel Doktori, Chair of OpenSecrets’ Board of Directors, expressed the board’s enthusiasm for the appointment, saying, "We are thrilled to welcome Hilary as the next executive director of OpenSecrets. Throughout a wide-ranging search process, Hilary distinguished herself as an innovative technologist, a compelling communicator and a leader passionate about strengthening American democracy through campaign finance data. Hilary joins a skilled and focused team and will benefit from building on top of the nation-leading foundation that Sheila Krumholz built over 17 distinguished years as Executive Director.”
Braseth assumes the leadership role at OpenSecrets during a critical election cycle marked by the intersection of emerging technologies and threats to transparency in campaign finance and voting rights. OpenSecrets is confident in Braseth's ability to navigate and address these challenges head-on.
Braseth most recently was a Public Service Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Together with her experience as a Technology Policy Design Fellow at the Aspen Institute, she has demonstrated a commitment to safeguarding the integrity and accessibility of elections. In addition to her academic and policy expertise, Braseth's prior roles have included technical product development and entrepreneurial design.
About her appointment Braseth says, "I’m delighted by this opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented individuals and with one of the most critical institutions supporting democracy. OpenSecrets fills a much-needed gap for journalists, scholars, and voters to understand a full picture of how and why leaders become elected and policies get made. This organization is well-positioned to continue providing world-class data and understanding of money’s political role. I’m eager to put my background in product development, design, and innovation to work to bring even more data and transparency to the people.”
Created in 2021 through the merger of the Center for Responsive Politics and the National Institute on Money in Politics, OpenSecrets remains steadfast in its commitment to nonpartisanship, independence and nonprofit principles.
