Some were kept outside in kennels; some were in sheds on a property; some in dark, musty basements with no light. But they were all confined to a crate or kennel as far as we could tell, with no food or water or ability to get out and walk or exercise at all. At one location, there was a wall of cages in a dark basement with no light, said Lauren Cowell, ASPCA Director of Field Operations.
In that wall of cages was Fiona, one of 89 terrified dogs who were rescued from a dogfighting ring operating across Long Island, New York City and in several other states. When we first met Fiona, two things were clear: she had been through trauma we couldn’t begin to imagine, and she needed help immediately.

For this week only, we are launching the Fiona Fund in honor of this resilient dog, so that we can continue our lifesaving work to reach other animals who are suffering and desperately need our help. Following her rescue, Fiona had a long road ahead of her at our Cruelty Recovery Center, where she initially showed signs of severe fear. There she was given behavioral rehabilitation, enrichment and care.
Every day, dogs like Fiona are able to receive critical care like this because of people like you.
